I love doing posters. I love them even more when I get to illustrate them. This particular poster is for a musical being produced for a local theatre. It’s for a very popular brand. So the first challenge is staying within the established look and using the elements that are recognizable with the story. Obviously [...]
Pencils and Inks
by Matthew Childers on December 7, 2011 in Comics, featured
I finished illustrating a page today that I thought I’d share. I’ve included the beginnings of the inks so you can see my pencils as well as the inks in progress, and the finished inks. Normailly these days I tend to run the range on tight or loose when it comes to pencils. The page [...]
Teaser pages.
by Matthew Childers on December 2, 2011 in featured
Wow it’s been a while. I’ve done alot of work I can’t really show right now. Anyway I just thought I’d post these teaser pages to a little story I’ve worked on. Not sure if it will see the light of day but hopefully it will. Still crossing the fingers. I ended up pretty happy [...]
You won’t like it when I’m angry…
by Matthew Childers on March 24, 2011 in Comics
The last week or two I’ve been sick, my little girl has been sick.. and well.. it’s not been fun. I started on this sketch before I got the flu and put the finished touches on the inks last night, the first real night I’ve had in the studio. Unfortunately a whole week away from [...]
Put ‘em up…
by Matthew Childers on March 10, 2011 in featured
These are some posters I designed for the All-Star race in Charlotte for this year. They wanted a WANTED poster theme but I didn’t want it to look too cliche’. So after months of tweaking a mediocre design we got some good photography and I completely redesigned these around the photography.
Knoxville Cancer Society Illustrations

These are actually a blast from the past. They were done back in 2008 I think, but they are still a few of my favorite pieces. I have up until now negected to add them to my portfolio for some odd reason and I decided today to rectify that situation. In doing so I figured [...]
Superman sketch
by Matthew Childers on March 7, 2011 in Comics, featured
Everyone who knows me, knows that Superman is one of my favorite comic characters of all-time. While i’ve been underwhelmed by the comics as of late and the movies definately need an update (hopefully Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder will do something epic)… I still love drawing him. The strange thing is that I’ve not [...]
Character Concept Sketch
by Matthew Childers on February 24, 2011 in featured
This is a concept sketch I did the night before last for a little side-fun project I’m contemplating with my friend Nick Kask. The idea is kind of grounded in a fantasy like universe, you know.. with dragons and wizards and such. This is my first attempt at the lead character but it came off [...]
Wolverine Sketch
by Matthew Childers on February 23, 2011 in featured
Just pulled this sketch I did from my sketchbook yesterday and threw in some color. It was kind of an excercise to just loosen up and play with my Pentel Pocket Brush pen. This was REALLY loose but for some reason it still came out very clean. It certainly isn’t up to the quality of [...]
Comic cover art process from start to finish.
by Matthew Childers on February 11, 2011 in Comics, featured
One of the things I love is going online, finding other artists and reading about their artist process. It gives me new ways to think about things and insights into how they developed their particular style or gives me questions to ask myself as I create new pieces. So… I decided to post a step [...]
