While I’m not really able to show the actual sequential pages for the story I’m currently illustrating, this was a character piece I did to highlight one of the main characters and to give me a little more confidence in the style I’m working in. (more…)

An old friend Jason Latour who was the artist on The Expatriate for Image Comics (written by B. Clay Moore) asked me to do a pin-up a few years ago as a filler page in his book. I happily accepted and came up with this little diddy. I tried to keep with the color scheme of the actual book.. not sure if I did since I never found a copy of it. My comic shop at the time was rather lacking in the image books. But regardless I liked the piece. (more…)

Okay. For some reason I got an itch to add some testosterone to the page and do an actual existing character piece. Why I chose Aquaman I don’t know.. I think it’s because I would seriously kill to do an Aquaman book. There is soooo much potential in this character that hasn’t been tapped into. I know most people think he’s kinda lame but the very very few times he’s been done well (The Butch Guice Aquaman was pretty awesome)… well.. when he’s done well he’s awesome.
Anyway I kinda wanted to play up the underwater feel.. using alot of cool colors which work well with the classic aquaman costume with the orange which constrast the cool blues and greens so well. Plus his blonde hair which I used as a focal point is really badass when it’s given that flowy underwater look. To keep from making him look too much like the Superfriends goofy version I decided to go with a bearded aquaman… which ties much closer to the whole Arthurian legends aspect of Aquaman. This piece was penciled and digitally inked. I really kind fought with his face…still not completely happy with everything about it but overall it turned out pretty nice. Any ideas for another character I could do?? I’m taking ideas…

So every now and then I check out warren ellis’s website. He has a contest he does weekly called REMAKE/REMODEL where you take a character from the past and revamp them for today’s market. Normally I kind of pass over the challenge to concentrate on my other work but every so often I just decide to have fun with it. So this week’s character was called the FLAMINGO. I’ll let you stew on that for a moment… So anyway this is what I put together just as an excercise in fun. I actually drew a whole sequential page with this but decided to just ink this panel since I didn’t have much time before the thread was deleted and I wanted to get it out there. I might go back and finish it all one of these days. This also represents the first time I’ve used a brush in months. I was actually very happy with the end result especially considering I ink for crap. I might have to pull out my brushes again for something else. Anyway for now I digress… enjoy…

I actually saw an article in imagineFX magazine about a Frank Frazetta tribute and it totally inspired me to do this piece. The fun part about this was that the entire piece is all pencils. I never inked it but after giving it some work in photoshop i made it look pretty close to what an inked piece would look like. And then when i went to color it went to a whole other level.

Every so often on Warren Ellis’s forums he puts out a challenge to rework an old character concept to fit today’s reader’s expectations. This was a challenge that I took up a month or so ago to redesign a character called “THE SPIDER QUEEN”. I’m a definate believer that contrast makes for interesting art… and here I contrasted the sexyness of the woman combined with the silk and asian themes with the spider…something that is grotesque and creepy.

One of the projects that I have on the back-burner is a book called Used Parts. (Used Parts is a copyright Mordechai Luchins and Nope Callahan.) From time to time when I’ve found a little break in my work I’ve worked on character designs. The one pictured his is a character called Anvil… one of the main characters from the book. I really wanted to juxtapose the sexiness of the female form with the pure coldness of her machine body.
