I love doing posters. I love them even more when I get to illustrate them. This particular poster is for a musical being produced for a local theatre. It’s for a very popular brand. So the first challenge is staying within the established look and using the elements that are recognizable with the story. Obviously from the headline of this post you can see what that particular brand might be. So yes.. this one is for the ladies out there. LOL. And yes. I’m sure there will be alot of Pink when all is said and done. For now I thought I’d post the sketches I did for this particular poster. Eventually when I get the finished poster completed and have permission I’ll post the actual process behind the full poster.

The sketches for this are kind of atypical of what I normally do for sketches. I had to use alot of reference for these so i decided to do the sketches fairly tight so that the client could get a pretty accurate idea of what the poster will look like. And in doing so I had to do alot of research to pull images to make sure it comes across exactly how i wanted it. Anyway so I won’t tell you which one they chose just yet. But I was pretty happy with all three of these.

I finished illustrating a page today that I thought I’d share. I’ve included the beginnings of the inks so you can see my pencils as well as the inks in progress, and the finished inks. Normailly these days I tend to run the range on tight or loose when it comes to pencils. The page really dictates how loose or tight I am. If the page has alot of people then I can be much looser as I usually want my figure work to have a little bit of an expressionistic feel. So I don’t try to be so tight except when I hit a detail that I just want to get right. Those that know me, know I actually used to be obsessive with the amount of detail and or tightness in my pencils. The problem with being too tight is that my finished work ends up looking way too stiff and inking becomes too much of a chore.

That all being said, the layout of this happened pretty quick. Once I sat down and worked out what I wanted to happen in each frame it came to me pretty quick. Unfortunately I rushed the page a bit too much and penciled it very loosely and didn’t think through alot of the details. Added to that I was trying to ink it with a Pentel Brush pen.. which is a great tool but doesnt allow me to get the detail with the brush i wanted So I ended up inking it and screwing up the first go-round. So what you’re seeing here is the second pass. I decided to pencil it a bit tighter concentrating alot on the details of the backgrounds on the first page just to make sure i got everything the way i wanted it. Then i went in and inked it with a combination of a Sable brush which gave me a much better and more natural line quality, and some Microns. Overall it was alot of fun to illustrate, just wish I had done it right to begin with.

Anyway I just thought I’d post these teaser pages to a little story I’ve worked on. Not sure if it will see the light of day but hopefully it will. Still crossing the fingers. I ended up pretty happy with alot of the background work here and some of the figure work although I felt like it was a bit stiff. The inking turned out better than I thought it would.. there were times where I felt very uncertain with the inking but it got easier as I went along. There are more pages to this obviously but I only felt comfortable sharing a few.. don’t want to show all the good stuff. These four pages though flowed really nicely and I felt like they deserved a good sharing.

The last week or two I’ve been sick, my little girl has been sick.. and well.. it’s not been fun. I started on this sketch before I got the flu and put the finished touches on the inks last night, the first real night I’ve had in the studio. Unfortunately a whole week away from the drawing table doesnt bring out the best. I took an illustration that was looking pretty good and fudged up a few things on it (namely the chain mail on the Captain America Uniform). Luckily it was mean to be subdued anyway with color so I think the color on this helped that tremendously. The idea was that you see the reflection of the Hulk in Caps shield. I think it turned out pretty nice even though I fought with the balance of the color… you have to be able to see the color variations in the shield but also know you’re looking at an image of the Hulk too. There’s alot more I could add to this but I’m about to put my time and effort into some sequential stories so I’m putting an end to any sketch/like illustrations like this for a while and I just wanted to clear this off my desk. I’m still pretty happy with it. But if I were to do this as a commissioned piece I’d fix a few things.

These are actually a blast from the past. They were done back in 2008 I think, but they are still a few of my favorite pieces. I have up until now negected to add them to my portfolio for some odd reason and I decided today to rectify that situation. In doing so I figured I’d feature them here.

These particular illustrations won the Judges Choice Addy back in 2009 in Knoxville and were pretty well recieved by the client as well. The challenge with these was timing and the fact the illustrations were in a style well outside my comfort zone. The Art Director on the project wanted a particular style and I said.. ‘why not’. So I broke down the style from an image he provided (which was a hand painted style) and figured out a way to do it digitally, mainly because to do these justice by hand painting them they would have to be pretty big paintings, and we didn’t have time to get something like that scanned or photographed for the usage we needed it for. So I developed a way to pull it off pretty much all digitally. The only thing hand drawn on these are the inked lines, which I did I think with a brush.

Anyway these pieces really held up and while I don’t expect to ever be asked to do anything like this again I’d be more than happy to play with it if any client ever requested something like this again.

Everyone who knows me, knows that Superman is one of my favorite comic characters of all-time. While i’ve been underwhelmed by the comics as of late and the movies definately need an update (hopefully Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder will do something epic)… I still love drawing him. The strange thing is that I’ve not really drawn a pure superhero anything in quite some time. So I sat down the other night and just put pencil to paper.. something I rarely do. I think I’ve actually been over-planning my drawing, and not letting my inner geek just go crazy. So with this I just approached it from a kind of pure state of drawing. Just a pencil, paper, and an eraser. And seeing what I could come up with. It was a very fluid and fun drawing to do and between sessions at the art-board I found myself pining to go back. I drew the character shot first and then slowly worked in the background. There are of course things I’d probably go back and change if I had the inclination or if I were to redraw it but I am pretty pleased with the result. It’s really opened my eyes to some of the things I’ve been dealing with in regards to my work lately. So hopefully it will lead to better results from me in the future.

I hope you enjoy…

The idea is kind of grounded in a fantasy like universe, you know.. with dragons and wizards and such. This is my first attempt at the lead character but it came off a little too asian. Still it was a fun little exercise.

Just pulled this sketch I did from my sketchbook yesterday and threw in some color. It was kind of an excercise to just loosen up and play with my Pentel Pocket Brush pen. This was REALLY loose but for some reason it still came out very clean. It certainly isn’t up to the quality of my finished pieces by any stretch of the imagination but I like doing these kind of sketches and seeing what happens and the things that I do like. Those happy little accidents. I really enjoyed some of the brushwork I did and found that the areas that were not trying to be too complicated.. the simple brush strokes just made me happy. And combine that will the fact that I’ve really been enjoying watching Disney animation lately it’s really leading me down a path of deconstructing my style and approaching things from a simpler/stripped down style. Hopefully it will lead to better work.

One of the things I love is going online, finding other artists and reading about their artist process. It gives me new ways to think about things and insights into how they developed their particular style or gives me questions to ask myself as I create new pieces. So… I decided to post a step by step of my process of one of my latest illustrations. This piece was done as a imock-cover for a book for my friendMordechai Luchins. You can view the images below. Click for larger versions.

First let me say that this is not a book for Dark Horse Comics, even if I wish it were. I just loved the logo and since it’s a mock-cover.. i can do what I want.

So the first image below is the sketch i worked from. Sometimes I do thumbnails, and sometimes I do my sketches on layout paper. This was done on 14×17 layout paper at pretty near full size for a comic book page (11×17). I really wasn’t thinking ‘cover’ at the time, just more of an image because I was just setting out to draw something as a warm-up. It really was meant more of a sketch just to draw. But the idea had been stuck in my head for a cover for doing an image with the two heroes acting kind of tough, ready to take on the next fight. I originally thought about having an extreme foreground image of guys with guns or baseball bats, ect,.. to show some kind of impending danger, but I never really got around to working that into the scene. As I said this was more of a warm-up sketch at the time. A few days later I decided to make this into a cover, and I scanned this in and started moving it around on a comic cover layout to see how i could throw in a title, ect, and using my wacom tablet I tried again to establish some kind of scene. Again no dice.. nothing worked.. so I set it aside for a couple days, almost ready to just move onto something new.

The second image is what I call pre-inks. I had printed out the sketch onto 8.5×11 bond paper (basically regular printer paper) with a mock blue-line comic page frame to just see if i could create something from what I had. I wasn’t hopeful, but after looking at some work by artist Jae Lee, and how he sometimes just let his blacks of his figures just melt right into the shadow of a background, I decided to see what happened if I just let the background be black. I outlined all he figures, filled in the background with two or three half-dead sharpies (oh the smell) and then using a Pitt Brush Pen and a Micron Pigma Liner (size 1 or 3, can’t remember) I just began my process of pre-inking the piece. Doing this really helps me visualize how it will look as a finished piece, it lets me experiment with shadow and light and really just have fun. I wanted the lighting to be strong and really kind of come from the above and to the left slightly, and just let the figures melt into the shadows but still retain enough information to stand out from them as well. Sometimes this works great, sometimes you go through three sheets of paper before you realize.. it’s time to step away. For some reason though this one worked out great. I couldnt put it down, I just kept going until I was satisfied with the look.

Now bear in mind I didn’t add any grey-tones. I just wanted simple black and white relationships, and let the blackest blacks establish the forms.

The third images is the finished pencils. This stage was pretty simple, but probably the most time consuming. I printed out the pre-inks as blueline on 11×17 board. I just then penciled almost as if I were pencilling on a lightbox. I refined things, and added greytones. It’s hard to explain this process as it just is what it is.

The fourth image is the digital inks. Some artists swear by a brush. I actually prefer to use one when actually inking traditionally but man.. is it a step that just bores me to tears. I prefer just the drawing side of things. Soo.. I tried something new here that I really liked. I took the pencils from the previous stage and threw them on a comic book blue-line template I have. I sized them how I wanted them to leave room for a logo later. I darkened the pencils slightly using the curves feature in photoshop to adjust the darkness and brighten up the whites, but only so much. Previously I would have done it to the point where the mid-tone grey of the pencils was almost black but this really choked up the lines and things would end up looking off to me. But after looking at Jae Lee’s work on the Dark Tower series by Marvel I was impressed how Richard Isonove would just take Jae Lee’s pencils and leave the pencils pretty much as is and almost paint the blacks over top. I did the same thing just using the hard round brush in photoshop with the hardness pulled down to almost nothing. I can’t say how much I loved this method. It was a little time consuming but a few hours and the piece was finished. And I didn’t even have to get my hands all inky…

The last image is the final image. I added color in photoshop and let me say.. if I had a real colorist this would probably look so much better. I’m the world’s laziest artist when it comes to color. I basically added some quick base colors as local color and then threw a bright vibrant red as an overlay on top and adjusted layers until i got it the way i wanted. Simple. Not too much. For some reason the colors came off making me think of a Hellboy cover so I was happy at that point. I added a little signature texture that I like just for giggles and with that. I was done.
