Masters of the Universe

I had the incredible privilege of being commissioned to create a private Masters of the Universe cover illustration — and honestly, it was pure joy from start to finish.

As a kid, I loved He-Man. Maybe not quite as much as Star Wars or Transformers/G.I. Joe, but it was definitely up there in the pantheon of childhood legends. And that cartoon — who could ever forget it?

Last year, I watched the Masters of the Universe toy documentary and it reignited all that nostalgia. It reminded me how the creative inspirations that fueled that toy line still shape the things I love to draw today.

So when this commission came along, I felt like a kid in a candy store.
It wasn’t just a chance to revisit a world I grew up with — it was a chance to draw massive, larger-than-life heroes and villains again. Lately, I’ve been leaning into more kinetic, expressive pieces, but this one called for something solid, powerful, and form-driven — a moment frozen in classic comic cover storytelling.

And of course, I couldn’t resist putting the bad guy front and center. The client mentioned it, but truthfully, I was already there.

I had a blast experimenting with textured backgrounds and bold composition, pushing it to feel like a true work of art — something that could hang on a wall, not just live in a sketchbook. I want every commission to feel like that: a statement piece that makes the buyer proud to own it. And with this one, I really think it hit the mark.
